SMART Camera Program
Surveillance, Mapping & Reporting Technology (SMART) Camera Project
Overview
The Geneva Police Department aims to empower residents and business owners to play active roles in fighting crime in our city. The SMART Camera Project allows you to partner with us in keeping our neighborhoods safe by providing information on the security cameras you are already using to protect your home and property.
With the expansion of privately owned cameras such as the Ring, Nest, Blink, and more, the Geneva Police Department is looking to identify homeowners and business owners in our community who would be willing to share their video footage with the Geneva Police Department should a crime occur nearby. Timely access to video evidence can be incredibly helpful for officers investigating crime in your area. Footage captured on your security cameras may help police gather information, develop leads, solve cases and protect the public. The SMART Camera Project ensures an easy and efficient way for you to share your video.
The SMART Camera Project does not allow police personnel to gain live-feed access to your camera.
Camera Registry
The SMART Camera Registry helps us develop a map of working security cameras throughout Geneva. With this map, officers have the ability to readily locate security cameras when investigating a crime reported in your area.
By registering your video security system, Geneva Police will be able to identify your property location as having active security camera(s). Officers will also have the ability to contact you directly if it is determined your camera may have captured valuable video evidence.
Submit Your Camera
Working with our community to deter crime and promote public safety is the goal of this registry. Accordingly, all participants agree to the following terms and conditions:
- Registration is voluntary.
- Registration information will be used by the Geneva Police Department for official purposes only.
- Registrants may be contacted by the Geneva Police Department and asked to check their recordings for a specific date and time should Detectives determine the potential for video evidence in the area.
- Footage containing or related to criminal activity may be collected by the Geneva Police Department for use as evidence during any stage of a criminal proceeding.
- Under no circumstances should registrants construe they are acting as an agent or employee of the city of Geneva or the Geneva Police Department.
If you wish to withdraw from the program, please contact the Geneva Police Department non-emergency line at (315)828-6771.
